Shopfront Sign Cost Guide — Sydney

Shopfront Sign Cost Guide — Sydney

"How much does a shopfront sign cost in Sydney?" is the most-asked question we get. The honest answer is "anywhere from $600 to $15,000" — which isn't useful unless you know why the range is so wide and where on it your job falls.

This guide breaks shopfront signage down into five real-world tiers, from the absolute entry point (a printed vinyl banner across an opening) to a fully illuminated custom facade with fabricated letters. For each tier, we give you the supply-only price, the install cost, and the total including design and GST.

All figures are in AUD, reflect 2026 Sydney metro pricing, and assume standard shopfront access (ground floor, ladder or small EWP, trading-hours install). Out-of-hours work, scissor lifts and heritage permits push the total higher — we'll flag when that matters.

The five cost tiers

Most Sydney shopfronts end up in one of five pricing tiers. The jump between tiers is larger than you might expect — going from a flat printed panel to illuminated letters roughly triples the total. Knowing which tier fits your brand and your landlord's rules is the biggest single lever on cost.

TierWhat it looks likeTotal installed (incl GST)
1 — Banner / temporaryPrinted vinyl banner or corflute across the opening$400 – $900
2 — Flat panelPrinted ACM panel mounted to existing fascia$900 – $2,500
3 — Applied letters3D acrylic or metal letters on a painted wall or panel$2,500 – $5,500
4 — Under-awning lightboxStandard double-sided A0 lightbox suspended from awning$1,600 – $3,200
5 — Illuminated facadeHalo-lit or face-lit fabricated letters + lightbox combo$6,000 – $15,000+

Tier 1 — The banner

Every new business eventually gets asked "when does your sign go up?" during fitout. A 540gsm PVC banner with eyelets and hems is the right answer while you wait for the real sign. Banners print at a solid colour quality and last six to twelve months outdoors in Sydney — long enough to bridge the gap between opening and permanent signage.

Tier 2 — The flat ACM panel

A printed ACM panel mounted over the existing fascia is the entry point to real signage. Typical Sydney shopfronts need a 2400 × 600mm or 3000 × 800mm panel, printed full colour, drilled and mounted with stainless fasteners. Supply sits around $400–$900 depending on size. Install is a 2-hour job for two installers with a ladder — usually $720 ex GST.

Tier 3 — Applied 3D letters

Applied letters change the perceived premium of a shopfront more than any other single upgrade. 10mm or 20mm acrylic laser-cut letters, or brushed stainless / brass fabricated letters, pin-mounted to a repainted wall, cost noticeably more than a flat panel — but the look is fundamentally different. Expect $2,500–$5,500 installed for a typical 200mm-tall wordmark across a 3m fascia.

Tier 4 — Under-awning lightbox

Under-awning lightboxes are the unsung hero of Sydney suburban shopping strips. They catch foot-traffic walking along the awning, they're visible at night, and they don't require permits in most council areas (they attach to your awning, not the building fabric). A standard A0 double-sided LED lightbox runs $1,600–$3,200 installed.

Tier 5 — Full illuminated facade

Fabricated metal letters with LED modules behind them (halo-lit) or LED-lit acrylic faces (face-lit), mounted to a fabricated aluminium tray or directly to the facade, represent the top of the shopfront market. Sydney council strips like Oxford Street, Crown Street and George Street Sydney CBD are dominated by this style. Budget $6,000 for a modest one-wordmark facade, $15,000+ for a full-width name + tagline with custom mounting.

The line items everyone forgets

  • Design fee — typically $0 for ready artwork, $50 for simple layout work, up to $350 for a full custom wordmark design.
  • Electrical connection — an illuminated sign needs a licensed sparkie. Budget $450–$900 for connection to an existing circuit, more if a new circuit is required.
  • Permits — illuminated or projecting signs in the City of Sydney LGA may need a DA. Allow 4–8 weeks and a $700+ application fee.
  • Removal of existing signage — if you're replacing a previous tenant's sign, disposal is usually $200–$400.
  • EWP hire — anything above second-storey awning height needs an elevated work platform. $550–$900 per day.

Window and wall graphics as add-ons

Every tier above can be rounded out with window graphics — frosted privacy film on glass partitions, cut vinyl wordmarks at eye level, full-coverage printed graphics for promotions. These are cheap relative to primary signage and dramatically lift the finished look.
