NHVR Oversize, Long Load & Heavy Vehicle Signs — Australian Guide

NHVR Oversize, Long Load & Heavy Vehicle Signs — Australian Guide

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is the Commonwealth body that regulates heavy vehicles (over 4.5 tonnes GVM) across all states and territories except WA and NT (where state regulators still apply with broadly similar rules). NHVR enforces Vehicle Standards Bulletin (VSB) specifications for the signs a heavy vehicle must carry — OVERSIZE, LONG VEHICLE, ROAD TRAIN, Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle (DNOTV), and rear marker plates to AS 4001.

For sign buyers — transport operators, fleet managers, crane and machinery hauliers — the practical takeaway is: these are all aluminium, all reflective (most are Class 1 or Class 400 mandatory), and all prescribed at specific sizes. You cannot substitute corflute or polypropylene. You cannot use non-reflective. A non-compliant sign on a heavy vehicle is a defect notice.

This guide covers the common NHVR sign types, the VSB reference for each, and how Platinum Signs manufactures to the spec.

DNOTV — NSW mandatory change Sept 2025

From September 2025, NSW made Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle (DNOTV) signs mandatory on rigid trucks and combinations that the driver needs to cross into an oncoming lane to complete a left turn. The rule now requires Class 400 diamond-grade reflective sheeting — an upgrade from older Class 2 specifications. Existing DNOTV signs manufactured to Class 2 spec are being phased out at vehicle renewal. Other states have similar trajectories but check the relevant state road authority before specifying.

Rear marker plates — AS 4001

AS 4001 prescribes the red-and-yellow chevron-striped rear marker plates required on heavy vehicles and trailers over 7.5 tonnes GVM. The Standard specifies aluminium substrate, reflective sheeting class (per AS/NZS 1906.1), dimensions, and the diagonal chevron pattern. There are two size classes (large and small) depending on vehicle type. As with all NHVR signs, material substitution is not permitted.

Vehicle Signs (NHVR, VSB12, DNOTV)

NHVR-compliant heavy vehicle signs — OVERSIZE, LONG VEHICLE, ROAD TRAIN, DNOTV, rear marker plates. Manufactured on 1.6mm aluminium with Class 1, Class 2 or Class 400 reflective per regulation.

Fleet compliance considerations

  • Keep a fleet register with install date and reflective-class expiry for every sign
  • Retroreflective sheeting has a 7–10 year rated life depending on class — schedule replacement before it fades below the Standard
  • State permit conditions can add extras (e.g. flashing lights in addition to OVERSIZE sign on Class 1 loads)
  • Some combinations require both front and rear signage — check VSB12 Part 2 for specific vehicle configurations
  • Magnetic versions are available for situational use (e.g. occasional oversize loads) but must still meet material and reflective-class specs

How Platinum Signs manufactures NHVR signs

Our vehicle signs are manufactured on 1.6mm aluminium substrate with the reflective class specified by the relevant regulation — Class 1 engineer-grade, Class 2, or Class 400 diamond-grade per AS/NZS 1906.1. We do not substitute substrates or sheeting class. For DNOTV specifically, we stock Class 400 variants to match the current NSW requirement. All permit-size combinations (OVERSIZE standard 450 × 1200, long-haul 600 × 1800) are available as pre-printed stock or custom to size with 5–10 day lead time.
