AS 1742 Traffic & Road Signs — Australian Compliance Guide

AS 1742 — Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices — is the Australian Standard series that governs every road and traffic sign used on public roads and most private roads in Australia. It's a multi-part Standard (parts 1 through 14+) covering regulatory signs, warning signs, guide signs, speed limits, parking, school zones, work zones, and more. Every state road authority references it. STOP, GIVE WAY, NO ENTRY, speed limits, parking restrictions, and work-zone signage all fall under AS 1742.
The critical thing to understand as a buyer: AS 1742 is stricter than AS 1319. Where AS 1319 workplace signs allow flexibility on material, AS 1742 road signs require 1.6mm aluminium substrate and Class 1 or Class 2 retroreflective sheeting (per AS/NZS 1906.1) for almost every regulatory sign. You cannot substitute corflute or polypropylene on a road sign and remain compliant.

Which signs are regulated under AS 1742?

Material requirements — aluminium, always
Every regulatory sign under AS 1742 must be manufactured on 1.6mm aluminium substrate. Not 1.2mm, not 2mm, not ACM, not colorbond. The 1.6mm specification is set by AS 1742.14 and is consistent across all state road authority technical specifications. The reason is performance: 1.6mm aluminium is the thinnest substrate that survives decades of UV, wind-loading, and vehicle impact without deformation, while being thin enough to be cost-effective at the enormous volumes road authorities buy.
Retroreflective sheeting is applied over the aluminium — Class 1 for high-visibility high-speed signs (most regulatory signs, stop signs, give way, speed limits on arterial roads) and Class 2 for lower-speed zones, urban streets, and some work-zone applications. Class 400 is a newer diamond-grade sheeting used on Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle (DNOTV) plates and some mandatory applications.

Work-zone and temporary signs
AS 1742.3 covers traffic control devices for work zones — the orange fluorescent signs you see around road works. These have their own colour system (fluorescent orange background, black legend) and sizing rules. The critical difference from AS 1319 is that work-zone signs are regulated under AS 1742.3 and must be aluminium + Class 1 reflective, even though they're temporary. Corflute 'ROAD WORK' signs sold by some general retailers are not AS 1742.3 compliant and will fail a Traffic Management Plan audit.

Common AS 1742 compliance failures
- Non-aluminium substrate — corflute or colorbond regulatory signs will fail immediately on any audited job
- Wrong reflective class — using Class 2 sheeting on an arterial road where Class 1 is required
- Non-standard size — a 450mm STOP sign (workplace size) used where a 600mm STOP sign is required
- Expired reflective sheeting — AS/NZS 1906.1 sheeting has a rated lifespan (7–10 years for most classes). Faded signs must be replaced
- Missing mounting hardware — pole-mount brackets must be rated for the sign and wind-load class of the road
