Illuminated Sign Types — Lightbox, Neon, 3D Letters Compared
If your shopfront or venue trades after dark, an illuminated sign isn't a luxury — it's the difference between being found and being walked past. But "illuminated" covers four completely different product categories, each with its own cost, lifespan and visual effect.
This guide compares them head-to-head so you can pick the right one the first time. We're going to cover flat LED lightboxes, custom LED neon (both static and programmable), halo-lit fabricated letters, and face-lit letterforms — plus the in-between formats like edge-lit acrylic and under-awning boxes.
Every price shown is ex GST, reflects 2026 Australian retail, and excludes install and electrical unless stated. Brightness figures are approximate and depend heavily on the LED module density your sign maker uses.
Flat LED lightboxes
The workhorse of illuminated signage. A flat lightbox is an aluminium frame, a printed or opaque face panel, LED strips or modules inside, and a driver. Modern slim boxes are 30–50mm deep; traditional boxes are 80–120mm. They're cheap to run (typical 30W LED module = 3–5W power draw), last 8–12 years, and work beautifully as primary shopfront signage when mounted high.
The trade-off is that a flat lightbox looks like a flat lightbox. There's nothing three-dimensional about it. For corporate and premium retail, that's a problem. For cafes, fast food, medical and most suburban retail, it's exactly right.

Custom LED neon
LED neon flex has almost entirely replaced traditional glass neon in commercial signage. It's a silicone or PVC tube with an LED strip inside, sold in meters, bent to shape around a clear acrylic backer, and mounted to a wall. The look is nearly identical to glass neon at 30–50% of the cost, with no mercury, no high-voltage transformers, and a ten-year typical lifespan.
Custom neon excels for wordmarks with flowing script, single-colour logos, and hospitality/entertainment brands that want personality. It's less suited to anything with fine detail, small text under 80mm tall, or multi-colour logos where each colour needs its own tube run.

Halo-lit fabricated letters
Fabricated letters (also called "built-up letters" or "channel letters") are the premium end of illuminated signage. Each letter is a three-dimensional metal or acrylic box, with LED modules inside and a clear or open back. Halo-lit means the light spills out behind the letter, creating a glow on the wall behind.
Face-lit is the same construction but with a translucent front face — the light projects forward through the letterform. Halo-lit is more sophisticated and subtle; face-lit is brighter and more legible from distance.

Power and electrical
All modern illuminated signage runs on 12V or 24V DC, stepped down from 240V AC mains through a driver (often called a "power supply" in spec sheets). The driver goes either inside the sign (for larger fabricated letters and lightboxes) or as an external plug pack (for small neon and portable signs). Under AS/NZS 3000 the final connection from mains must be done by a licensed electrician — any reputable sign maker will arrange this as part of the install.
