  • AS 1851 — Routine Service of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment. Governs inspection, testing, and maintenance after installation — including service tags and record-keeping.
  • AS 1319— Defines the visual “Fire” sign class (white pictogram on solid red) used across all fire-equipment location signage.

Placement and visibility

Fire and Rescue NSW publishes practical guidance that matches what WHS inspectors typically look for across Australian jurisdictions. The key placement rules they promote:

  • Mounting height — at least 2000 mm above floor level. Keeps the sign visible over people, stored goods, and mezzanine mounts.
  • Visible from at least 20 metres on approach. In open warehouses and large rooms, double-sided or flag-mounted signs may be required to achieve this.
  • At least one sign per extinguisher. Mounted above or immediately adjacent.
  • Class identification.Pair the location sign with a class-specific 200 mm disc identifying the extinguisher type (Water, Foam, Dry Powder, CO₂, Wet Chemical).
  • Clear floor space. The Standard is that extinguishers are unobstructed — and so their signage must remain clear of shelving, displays and temporary storage.

Water

Identifier: Solid red body

Use for: Class A only: wood, paper, cloth, textiles, plastics.

Avoid: Never on electrical or flammable liquid fires.

Foam (AFFF)

Identifier: Blue band on red body

Use for: Class A + B: general combustibles and flammable liquids.

Avoid: Not suitable for live electrical or cooking oils.

Dry Chemical Powder — AB(E)

Identifier: White band on red body

Use for: Class A, B, and E: combustibles, flammable liquids, and electrical.

Avoid: Leaves residue that can damage electronics.

CO₂

Identifier: Black band on red body

Use for: Class B + E: flammable liquids, electrical equipment, office/server rooms.

Avoid: Limited cooling effect — risk of re-ignition on Class A.

Wet Chemical

Use for: Class F: cooking oils and fats (commercial kitchens).

Avoid: Not for electrical fires.

Dry Chemical Powder — BE

The service tag itself counts as signage: it must be legible and attached to every extinguisher. Most extinguisher-service providers handle tag issuance, but if you manage the equipment in-house you’ll need AS 1851-compliant service tags ready to issue after each inspection.
