Retail & Shopfront Signage Checklist
A retail tenancy combines WHS duties (staff), consumer-law obligations (price display, refund policy) and shopping-centre tenancy requirements. Most centres have strict signage-approval rules — always check the tenant fit-out guide.
Last reviewed:
This checklist covers the typical specialty retail tenancy. Big-box retail, supermarkets and department stores have additional operational signage (checkout flow, loss prevention zones, customer service desks). Restaurants / food retail should also use the Commercial Kitchen checklist.

Frequently asked questions
Does my shopping centre need to approve my signs?
Most major shopping centres require signage approval as part of the tenant fit-out process. Storefront/facade signs, awning signs, hanging signs and window graphics are all typically approval-gated. Interior signs (customer service counter, policy signs, staff-only doors) usually don't require approval but must comply with centre fire/egress rules.
Do I need a CCTV sign?
Yes — if you operate CCTV, most states require clear notification to people entering the area that recording is in operation. The Privacy Act, the Workplace Surveillance Act (NSW), and various state Surveillance Devices Acts all require transparency about CCTV. Typical signage: 'CCTV in operation — 24 hours'.
What price-display rules apply?
Under the Australian Consumer Law, goods displayed for sale must show a total price inclusive of GST. If more than one price is displayed for the same good, the retailer must either charge the lowest displayed price or remove the good from sale. Clear, legible price tags and shelf-edge labels are the standard implementation.
