Electrical Safety Signs — Lockout/Tagout, Switchboard & Live Hazard

Electrical Safety Signs — Lockout/Tagout, Switchboard & Live Hazard

Electrical work is the highest-consequence trade in Australia — arc flash, electrocution and switchboard fires are unforgiving of missing or unclear signage. AS/NZS 4836 (safe working on low-voltage electrical installations) and AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) both prescribe specific signage for switchboards, isolators, and any energised work zone.

This page is the practical sign and label pack we supply to Australian electrical contractors, sparkies running residential, commercial and industrial work, and facility maintenance teams responsible for switchboard rooms.

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) tags — site essentials

  • Personal Danger tags (red/black, individual lockout — one per worker, not shared)
  • Out of Service tags (yellow, equipment isolated for repair)
  • Caution tags (yellow, equipment status changed)
  • First-Off tags (blue, multi-worker LOTO sequence)
  • LOTO station signage at switchboard rooms
  • Permit-to-work signs at high-risk isolation points

Switchboard labels — AS 3000 requirements

Every switchboard in Australia must be labelled with: main switch identification, individual circuit identification (which RCBO/MCB controls what), isolator-feed source, and arc-flash boundary if calculated. Engraved Traffolyte (two-colour laminated phenolic) is the gold standard — it's the only material rated for permanent identification on energised equipment.

Solar, battery & PV-specific signage

Solar PV installations under AS/NZS 5033 require additional signage at every isolation point: "Solar PV — Isolate AC and DC Supplies", DC-isolator labels, battery storage warnings (lithium fire hazard) and rooftop access markers for emergency services.

  • AC Main Isolator — Solar Supply
  • DC Isolator — Solar Array
  • Battery storage — Lithium-ion warning
  • Rooftop solar — emergency services notice (CFA/RFS)
  • Inverter location identification
  • PV string identification (string 1, string 2, etc.) for service access

Vehicle & toolbox compliance

Most electrical contractors also need: van/ute reflective compliance markers (chevrons rear, full-length side reflective), licence-display sticker (state electrical contractor licence number), test-and-tag stickers for portable equipment, and CalibrATion stickers for multimeters/clamp meters returning from cal lab.
