School Safety Signs — Evacuation, Emergency & Compliance

School Safety Signs — Evacuation, Emergency & Compliance

Australian schools — primary, secondary, OSHC, early-learning — sit under several overlapping compliance regimes: state Department of Education building requirements, the National Construction Code (NCC) for emergency egress, AS 2293 for exit signage, and AS 1319 for general workplace safety. Add allergen disclosure, asbestos register signage and playground equipment standards on top.

This page is the practical sign pack we supply to Australian schools, P&C committees and education department facilities teams. Everything is selected for the unique constraints of school environments — high-traffic, vandalism-resistant materials and installation heights chosen for child sightlines.

Egress & emergency — the non-negotiables

  • Exit signs (AS 2293) at every exit door, illuminated electrical or photoluminescent
  • Evacuation plan diagrams (laminated A3 or rigid 297×420mm) at every classroom and corridor
  • Fire extinguisher location signs above every extinguisher and hose reel
  • Assembly point signs in playground / oval / car park
  • Emergency procedures — laminated quick-reference cards in each room

Fire equipment signs

Fire extinguisher, hose reel, fire blanket, fire indicator panel signs — red AS 1319 colour, photoluminescent options available.

Allergen & dietary — the modern compliance layer

Anaphylaxis policy is mandatory in every Australian school. While not a signage standard, schools commonly post: "Nut-aware school" perimeter signs, allergen-disclosure posters in canteens (printed on washable rigid acrylic), and "EpiPen location" signs at sick-bay and front office.

Asbestos register & legacy buildings

Schools built before 2003 must maintain an asbestos register accessible to all staff and contractors. The register itself is paperwork, but supporting signs — "Asbestos register held at front office" and Danger — Asbestos warning signs at confirmed locations (ceiling cavities, eaves, fibre-cement panels) — are commonly required by state policy.

Playground & sports area signs

  • Playground rules sign (height, age range, supervision required) — typically 600×900mm ACM at entry
  • No bikes/scooters on play equipment
  • Sports equipment safety signs (gymnastics, skate ramps if present)
  • Pool / aquatic safety signs if school has a pool — separate AS 3979 compliance
  • First aid kit location signs
