Every occupied building in Australia built to the National Construction Code requires AS 2293-compliant emergency signs. The regime is strict: size, pictogram, viewing distance, installation height, illumination, battery backup duration and test frequency are all specified.

Electrical vs photoluminescent
Exit signs must be either: (a) electrical-illuminated with battery backup (most common in commercial buildings post-1995, tested annually for 90-minute duration), or (b) photoluminescent/glow-in-the-dark (acceptable in many Class 1-9 buildings subject to BCA and approval). Photoluminescent signs need no wiring and no battery testing but must be positioned where they can charge from ambient light.
