Council & Local Government Signage — Parks, Playgrounds & Public Facilities

Council & Local Government Signage — Parks, Playgrounds & Public Facilities

Local councils run an unusually broad signage program — every park, playground, pool, sportsfield, toilet block, library, depot, dog off-leash area, BBQ shelter, fishing platform and community hall has its own compliance overlay. AS 4685 covers playground equipment, AS 1742 covers regulatory road signs, AS 1428 covers accessibility, AS 1319 covers any workplace signage at depots — and council-specific by-laws sit on top.

This page is the practical sign pack we supply to Australian councils, parks-and-recreation teams, and local-government facility managers. Everything is built for outdoor longevity (5-10 year lifespan), accessible (AS 1428 contrast and font sizing) and matched to your council's brand-style guide.

Playgrounds — AS 4685 + AS 1742-aligned

  • Playground identification sign (park name, age range, supervision required)
  • Playground rules sign (no glass, no smoking, supervise children at all times)
  • Equipment age-rating signs (3-5 years, 5-12 years)
  • Emergency contact sign (000, council after-hours, park location identifier)
  • Surface inspection / maintenance contact
  • Allergen / shaded-play notice in some councils

Dog off-leash, on-leash & prohibited

Council by-laws require clear signage of dog status at every park/reserve entry and at boundary transitions. Standard pack: off-leash exercise area, on-leash only (entry sign), dogs prohibited (children's playground perimeter), and a council-by-law fine-amount notice for non-compliance.

Accessibility — AS 1428 compliance

Any sign at a council facility used by the public must consider AS 1428.1 (general access) and AS 1428.4.1 (tactile and braille signage). Tactile signs are mandatory at toilet doors, lift call buttons, and key wayfinding decision points. Font sizes follow AS 1428.4.2 viewing-distance rules — 25mm character height for 2m viewing, 50mm for 5m, 100mm for 10m+.

Toilet identification, lift braille, wayfinding tactile signs — AS 1428.4.1 compliant, supplied with Australian Standard pictograms.

Pools & aquatic centres

Council-operated aquatic facilities sit under AS 3979 (water-safety signage) and Royal Life Saving Society guidelines. Mandatory signage includes: depth markers (every 5m of pool perimeter), no diving (shallow end), supervision required (children under 10), pool rules summary, emergency 000 phone, defibrillator location.

Aluminium Signs

Marine-grade aluminium for any council sign within 5km of coastline, salt-spray zones, or pool/aquatic environments. 10+ year lifespan vs 3-5 years for standard ACM in those conditions.

Council depot — workplace signage

Council operations depots (parks crews, road maintenance, waste) need full AS 1319 workplace signage — PPE-mandatory, first aid, fire equipment, evacuation plans, plus depot-specific signs for fuel storage, chemical store, vehicle wash bay, asbestos register and lockup hours. We treat depot work as a construction-style sign pack.
