What ACM actually is

ACM (Aluminium Composite Material — sometimes called ACP, Aluminium Composite Panel) is a sandwich: two thin aluminium skins bonded to a polyethylene or mineral-filled core. Standard signage ACM runs 3mm total thickness with 0.21–0.3mm aluminium skins. The core gives rigidity without weight; the aluminium gives a paintable, print-ready surface that won't rust, warp or crack the way MDF or plywood would outdoors.

Most Australian sign makers stock ACM in 1220 × 2440mm (the standard sheet) and 1500 × 3000mm (outdoor grade). Thicknesses typically available are 3mm and 4mm. Anything thicker is specialty and rarely justified for flat signage.

Polyethylene core vs mineral core (fire rating)

After the Lacrosse and Grenfell fires, Australia tightened its rules on combustible cladding. For signage, the practical distinction is between polyethylene (PE) core ACM and mineral-core (fire-rated, often marketed as FR or A2) ACM. PE-core panels are fine for detached signs, freestanding pylons and most shopfront fascias. They are not compliant as wall cladding on Class 2–9 buildings over 3 storeys — but signage attached to a facade is almost always treated as signage, not cladding.

Surface finishes — matte, gloss, brushed, metallic

ACM comes in hundreds of colours, but commercial signage typically uses one of four families: matte white, gloss white, stock colours (Jet Black, Slate Grey, Natural Anodised, Traffic Red), or a premium finish. The premium finishes genuinely change the look of a sign and are worth understanding.

• Matte white — the neutral base. Takes print beautifully, doesn't glare under direct sun. Default for fascias and site hoardings.
• Gloss white — higher contrast but will show fingerprints and scuffs during installation. Best for indoor signs and protected areas.
• Brushed aluminium — a hairline grain finish that looks like real metal. Excellent for reception signs, corporate lobbies and high-end shopfronts. Costs roughly 30–40% more than standard ACM.
• Colorbond-match panels — a coated-steel product, not true ACM, but sold alongside for heritage and residential environments.

How ACM signs are actually made

Modern Australian sign shops — Platinum Signs included — use UV flatbed direct printing for most ACM work. The panel is loaded onto a flatbed printer (ours is a large-format UV flatbed, bed 3200 × 2000mm), printed in one pass in full colour, cured instantly under UV lamps, then trimmed to size on a CNC router. The result is a flush, single-panel sign with no applied vinyl edges to lift over time.

For simple one- or two-colour jobs at large volume, cut vinyl applied to blank ACM is still competitive. The two methods can be combined — direct-printed background with an applied metallic foil logo, for example.

Lifespan and warranty

A properly printed and installed ACM sign should last 7–10 years outdoors in most of Australia. That number drops in harsh coastal environments (think salt spray on the eastern seaboard) and climbs in protected, shaded locations. Platinum Signs warrants UV-printed ACM for five years against print failure when installed out of direct all-day north-facing sun — standard industry practice.

What ACM signs actually cost

Australian ACM pricing depends on three things: panel size, print complexity, and finishing (mounting method, cut-outs, frames). As a rough guide in 2026:

When NOT to use ACM

ACM is the default, but it isn't always right. For short-term property signage — real estate boards, election signs, event directional signs — corflute is dramatically cheaper and perfectly fit for purpose.

For truly premium corporate wayfinding where the sign is close to eye level, solid aluminium gives you a thicker, heavier, more substantial feel than ACM — at 2-3× the cost.
