Product details
Use OUT OF ORDER for temporary unavailability
Choose this notice when an item, amenity or service is temporarily unavailable for normal use. Add a separate message when people need an alternative location, assistance contact, reason or estimated return time.
Choose a flat material and portrait size
Polypropylene is the default rigid material. Vinyl is supplied in packs of three for prepared smooth surfaces, 3 mm Corflute suits temporary placement, and Colorbond provides a stronger mechanically fixed face. Choose 225 × 300 mm, 300 × 450 mm or 450 × 600 mm for the normal approach.
Place the notice at the point of use
Install it directly on or immediately before the unavailable equipment, door, lift, amenity or service point. Keep the full message visible before a person attempts use, and remove the notice when the item returns to service so the information remains reliable.
Use isolation and tags for hazardous equipment
An OUT OF ORDER sign provides information only. It does not isolate energy or protect a person working on plant. Follow the workplace procedure for shutdown, isolation, locking, tagging, testing, defect reporting, repair and authorised return to service where operation could cause harm.
Check the sign format before ordering
This is a general OUT OF ORDER notice for temporary unavailability. It is not an isolation device, personal danger tag or out-of-service tag, and it does not make faulty equipment safe. Apply the workplace isolation and maintenance controls required for the item and task.
- WorkSafe Victoria – Isolate, de-energise, lockout and tagout plant — WorkSafe Victoria says a tag provides information rather than effective isolation and explains separate roles for personal danger tags and out-of-service tags during plant work. Read source (opens in a new tab)A fixed OUT OF ORDER notice is not a substitute for the isolation, lock and task-specific tag required by the workplace procedure.
- WorkSafe Queensland – Isolating machinery when not in production — Queensland guidance describes shutdown, isolation, lockout, stored-energy control and tagging, and states that out-of-service tags identify faulty or damaged machinery. Read source (opens in a new tab)Use the appropriate isolation and tagout process where equipment operation could expose a person to harm.
- Safe Work Australia – Managing the risks of plant in the workplace — The model Code of Practice describes locking isolation points and controlling energy during plant maintenance, cleaning and repair. Read source (opens in a new tab)The fixed notice communicates availability only; it does not perform or verify the isolation process.
Before ordering
- Confirm that OUT OF ORDER is the exact status message required for the item or service.
- Check whether people also need an alternative location, contact, reason or expected return time.
- Identify the point where the notice must be visible before someone attempts use or entry.
- Choose polypropylene, pack-of-three vinyl, 3 mm Corflute or Colorbond for the mounting surface and exposure.
- Confirm isolation, lockout, tagout, defect reporting and repair controls separately where equipment may be unsafe.
This is general product information, not legal or engineering advice. A safety sign is one part of a workplace control system; confirm the site and jurisdictional requirements before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What does an Out of Order sign communicate?
It tells customers, visitors or staff that an item, room or facility is temporarily unavailable for normal use. Production artwork is being finalised, so check the approved proof before manufacture. Add a separate instruction when people need to know an alternative, contact point or expected return time.
Where should an Out of Order sign be displayed?
Place it directly on or immediately before the unavailable item or access point, where people can read it before attempting to use the equipment, door, lift, amenity or service. Keep the complete face visible and remove it promptly when the status changes.
Can this sign be used instead of an Out of Service tag?
Not for plant isolation or maintenance safety. A general OUT OF ORDER notice communicates availability, while an out-of-service tag can carry defect, isolation and responsible-person details. Use the workplace lockout and tagout procedure where unexpected operation or stored energy could cause harm.
Does this sign make faulty equipment safe?
No. The sign does not disconnect energy, prevent operation, secure an isolation point or repair a defect. Remove unsafe equipment from use and apply the isolation, lockout, tagout, barrier, reporting and repair controls required for the item and workplace.
Which material, size and mounting option should I choose?
Polypropylene is the default rigid option. Self-adhesive vinyl is supplied in packs of three for a clean smooth surface, 3 mm Corflute suits temporary placement, and Colorbond steel provides a stronger mechanically fixed face. Choose 225 × 300 mm, 300 × 450 mm or 450 × 600 mm. Optional holes apply only to rigid materials.
What volume discounts apply?
