Product details
Use the exact warning for an identified contact hazard
Choose this face when HOT SURFACE accurately describes the assessed hazard. It is suitable for approaches to plant, ovens, heated vessels, pipework, exhaust components and other equipment where contact can cause a burn. It does not communicate a temperature, safe-touch time or operating instruction.
Choose the material and portrait size
Polypropylene is the default rigid material. Vinyl is supplied in packs of three for prepared smooth surfaces, 3 mm Corflute suits temporary placement, and Colorbond provides a stronger mechanically fixed face. Choose 225 × 300 mm, 300 × 450 mm or 450 × 600 mm for the normal approach and surrounding visual conditions.
Position the warning before contact is possible
Mount the face on or immediately before the hazard so it is visible before a hand or body can reach the hot surface. Check every normal approach and keep the border, symbol and full legend unobstructed without covering controls, guards, instructions or inspection information.
Keep guarding and insulation as the primary controls
The sign supports the risk controls but does not replace them. SafeWork guidance calls for pipes and plant parts subject to heat to be guarded or insulated where injury is possible. Apply the barriers, isolation, cooling, procedures, training and PPE selected for the actual equipment and task.
Check the sign format before ordering
This is a general HOT SURFACE workplace warning face. It does not certify the plant, state a safe temperature or replace guarding, insulation, isolation, procedures, training or PPE. Confirm the hazard, exact message, placement and controls for the equipment and jurisdiction.
- SafeWork NSW – Plant, machinery and equipment — SafeWork NSW says pipes and other plant parts subject to heat or cold should be guarded or insulated where there is a risk of injury, as part of a combination of controls for plant hazards. Read source (opens in a new tab)The sign is a supporting warning and does not perform the guarding, insulation or risk assessment described in the guidance.
- Safe Work Australia – Food services: managing risks — Safe Work Australia identifies burns and hot surfaces as food-service hazards and gives examples including guards around hot surfaces, separating work areas from heat and using warning signs for hot equipment, surfaces and substances. Read source (opens in a new tab)Industry guidance; choose controls for the actual plant, task and workplace rather than treating the sign as a complete control.
Before ordering
- Confirm that HOT SURFACE is the exact warning required for the identified equipment or contact hazard.
- Check whether steam, hot liquid, ignition, radiant heat or another hazard needs additional wording or controls.
- Identify every normal approach where the warning must be visible before contact is possible.
- Choose polypropylene, pack-of-three vinyl, 3 mm Corflute or Colorbond for the mounting surface and exposure.
- Confirm guarding, insulation, isolation, cooling, procedures, training and PPE remain complete for the plant and task.
This is general product information, not legal or engineering advice. A safety sign is one part of a workplace control system; confirm the site and jurisdictional requirements before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What is printed on this Hot Surface sign?
The verified portrait artwork has a yellow field, black border, black warning triangle with an exclamation mark, and the exact words HOT SURFACE. It does not state a temperature, name the equipment or identify a safe-touch time.
Where should a Hot Surface sign be installed?
Position it on or immediately before the identified equipment, pipework or surface, where people can see the warning before reaching the contact hazard. Keep it clear of guards, controls and operating instructions, and repeat the warning at separate approaches where one face is not visible.
Does the sign make a hot surface safe to touch?
No. The sign warns people but does not cool, guard or insulate the surface. Where reasonably practicable, use controls such as guarding, insulation, barriers, isolation, cooling time, safe operating procedures, training and suitable PPE based on the plant and task risk assessment.
Can this sign replace a burn, steam or hot-liquid warning?
Only use HOT SURFACE when that exact message accurately describes the hazard. Steam, hot liquid, radiant heat, ignition risk or a life-threatening condition may need different wording, symbols, barriers or emergency instructions. Confirm the complete message from the actual hazard assessment.
Which material, size and mounting option should I choose?
Polypropylene is the default rigid option. Self-adhesive vinyl is supplied in packs of three for a clean smooth surface, 3 mm Corflute suits temporary placement, and Colorbond steel provides a stronger mechanically fixed face. Choose 225 × 300 mm, 300 × 450 mm or 450 × 600 mm for the approach and mounting position. Optional holes apply only to rigid materials.
