Farm & Rural Property Signage

Rural properties combine biosecurity duties, chemical hazards, heavy machinery, livestock risk and public-access exposure. Farm gate signage is one of the primary ways a landholder discharges the general biosecurity duty.

Is a biosecurity sign legally required at a farm gate?

State biosecurity Acts impose a general biosecurity duty — a landholder must take reasonable steps to manage biosecurity risk. Signs aren't specifically prescribed, but they're the primary way landholders discharge the duty (notifying visitors of conditions of entry). In NSW, pairing a BMP with a gate sign gives the landholder grounds to prosecute a visitor who enters against the conditions.

Do hobby farms need signs too?

Yes — biosecurity risk doesn't distinguish by farm size. Fruit fly, myrtle rust, livestock diseases and weeds affect small blocks just as much as commercial operations. Small properties with agritourism visitors, livestock or bordering commercial farms should signpost at minimum.

What material for farm gate signs?

Aluminium or ACM for permanent gate signs (weather-resistant, no fading). Corflute for temporary notices (spray zones, seasonal quarantine). Avoid plain Corflute for long-term mounting — it becomes brittle in full sun.
